Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which Is Better for an Ecommerce Store?

After 25 years in digital delivery, one of the most common horror stories we see is this, a business has paid for a website, app, or system, they assume they own it, then the moment they want to change developer, move hosting, or scale the product, they find out they do not have the rights or the access they thought they had.
This usually shows up as IP problems.
Source code being withheld or “locked”, repositories controlled by the developer, files encrypted, design assets not handed over, animation files and illustrations treated as copyrighted work that cannot be reused, even situations where a client is asked to pay extra fees just to have their own platform released.
To be fair, sometimes this is agreed upfront, some providers make it clear they own parts of the platform, or the client signs terms without fully understanding the long term impact. But in many cases it is simply vague wording, assumptions, or a lack of clear documentation at the start.
The result is the same, the business loses momentum, pays more than expected, and gets trapped when they need to move forward.
Quick IP checks before you start a project
• Confirm in writing who owns the source code once paid for
• Confirm where the code will live, and who controls the repository
• Confirm you will have full admin access to hosting, domains, and third party services
• Confirm ownership and handover of design files, graphics, icons, and animations
• Make sure anything excluded, licensed, or proprietary is clearly stated
If you already have a developer, check this now
• Do you have access to the source code and the repo
• Do you have admin access to hosting and your domain registrar
• Do you have copies of design files and original assets
• Is anything encrypted, restricted, or controlled by the developer
• If you left tomorrow, could you take your platform with you
IP is not a boring legal detail, for many businesses it is the difference between owning an asset and renting one without realising.
